Titanesque Cosplay: Before & After

April 15, 2015

What I love most about photography is that pretty much anything goes! As long as you produce a picture, it’s photography! So with me being a huge Anime fan, along with having Photography as a profession, I sometimes combine the two! Life doesn’t get much better than that. ;)

I had the lovely opportunity to work with the talented cosplay group, Titanesque Cosplay! This group of individuals are so kind and down to earth. Did I mention Talented? They are so AMAZING at what they do, and I got to capture their cosplays with my camera and for that, I am honored.

Each person dressed up as a character from the JRPG game Atelier Meruru. Atelier Meruru comes from a series of JRPG games for the Playstation console that are very cute & strategic. My loving sweetheart got me all of the games for Christmas this past year, so playing these games and then receiving this opportunity made me that more excited to do this photoshoot!

All photos were shot at Anime Matsuri which ran from April 3rd to April 5th in Houston, Texas. Since the company I work for helped produce the show, I got to go into any part of the convention without buying a pass, which was very nice! :)

The convention provided backdrops, which was pretty cool. There was one specific background that worked REALLY well with the Titanesque Cosplay group. It featured cream colored pillars and arches that made the place look very antique and rustic, which matched some of the areas you can travel to in the Atelier games!

There was also a backdrop with a big wooden door that fit one of the characters from the group better, so we shot there for their portfolio pictures. What I love most about cosplay photography (even though I am just starting to get into it) is the fact that Cosplay photography allows you to step out of the real world and create images that are of another world and give you a chance to bring something new to the table, along with bringing a story with characters to life.

I am so happy with the shots I did get to take. Their cosplays are so detailed and beautiful and it just made the photoshoot that much better. They also won the “Best in Show” award at the convention, along with the Judge’s award, which is fantastic! Congrats to Titanesque Cosplay!

I went very detailed with each image to make sure each of their characters were done justice. Here’s a couple of before & after of the images I have been working on!

The backdrop alone just wasn’t enough for me when it came to Meruru and Totori. Using the case of the Atelier Meruru game as a reference, along with some game illustration (below), I created these images above. I wanted to stay true to the cutesy/pastel palette that these characters tend to display in the game, and added the bokeh stars for some added effect. I feel they help bring the photo together. :)

Next up is Esty Dee from Atelier Meruru.

Since Esty doesn’t stand out as much as Meruru and Totori in the game, I had to really dig for ideas on how to bring about Esty’s character to life. I adjusted the colors a bit to still have the same feel as Meruru’s and Totori’s, but without being the same since Esty is more of a fighter and not an alchemist. I found a fan art image (below) that featured rose petals, and I thought it was the perfect touch for this character.

Then we have Lias Falken from Atelier Meruru.

It was a bit tough to use references for what direction I should go for when I was working on Lias. I did run across one YouTube video that showed more of their role in the game and was able to go from there. Since the building that Lias is a Gate Keeper for a building in the woods, I decided to add shrubbery to the overall image. Plus, I didn’t really like the fake stone look that was surrounding the wooden door with the backdrop we were using. It was dull and had splotches of color that just did not fit. I felt that adding the shrubbery gave it more life and color and more true to the environment you would find Lias in.

After pulling at my hair a few times and going deep into perfectionist mode, I finally finished all of these photos in about 5 days. Usually it does not take me so long to edit about 15 photos but like I said before, I went full blown perfectionist to make sure their character’s were done justice. I can happily say I am pleased with the results and sleep soundly at night. :)
